What is encryption and why do I need it?

Changes in federal law are affecting requirements to ensure member information is kept confidential and the transmission of that information is secure over the Internet. In order to comply with the current requirements for transmission over the Internet, the browser you use must be capable of supporting encryption/de-encryption.

Encryption is the process of converting data into a secure format for transmission. Encryption scrambles data that is sent from ODS to you. Your browser must be capable of decrypting, or unscrambling, the data. To do this, you will need a 128-bit capable browser.

Browsers with 128-bit encryption provide the best protection when transmitting confidential data over the Internet. You must update your browser to 128-bit encryption or you will not be able to use some areas of the ODS website.

How do I upgrade to 128-bit encryption?

Go to the website for the browser of your choice, and download the latest version. IMPORTANT: You may want to back-up emails, bookmarks and address books before upgrading. The upgrade process could delete these items.

Why can't I access any secure pages on the ODS website with Internet Explorer?

Internet Explorer has security settings that may need to be updated. The common error message you may see is "The page cannot be displayed. Cannot find server or DNS Error. " Please visit Microsoft's support page for more information.

Why do I sometimes get "page can not be displayed" error?

There can be many reasons you get this error message, but the most likely cause is low system resources. You may want to close some programs or windows and try reloading the page. If this doesn't work you can visit Microsoft's support pages to read about other possible solutions.
